On every second Tuesday of each month, Microsoft issues what is known as critical updates. When you installed your Microsoft platform, you must have downloaded atleast 75 critical updates, including SP2 and the Genuine Advantage Tool that Microsoft installs into your pc to see if your windows platform is legal.

If you have never installed any updates, I would open start and open Windows updates. Microsoft will scan your computer and tell you all the critical updates that you need.

Myself when I installed Windows XP Pro., I did not turn on the auto updates, as Microsoft will start sending all 75 plus at once and it can run for hours. After I installed them manual I set my pc for auto updates. As I will only get the ones that come out on every second Tuesday of the month.

If there is a really critical flaw in Windows that requires urgent attention Microsoft will release a patch earlier for downloading.

For the life of me I will never understand how Microsoft can sell any windows platform with 75 plus flaws in them. Kind of like buying junk. Then you really don´t have much a have choice.

Hope I have been of help to you.

Microsoft updates are patches to Microsoft software.
"A patch is a small piece of software designed to update or fix problems with a computer program. This includes fixing bugs, replacing graphics and improving the usability or performance. Though meant to fix problems, poorly designed patches can sometimes introduce new problems (aka. software regressions)."

"Because the word "patch" carries the connotation of a small fix, large fixes may use different nomenclature. Bulky patches or patches that significantly change a program may circulate as "service packs" or as "software updates". Microsoft Windows NT and its successors (including Windows 2000, Windows XP, and later versions) use the "service pack" terminology."
