My sister has two cats, and they are constantly in an empty cardboard box, under the table, or on top of a shelf. What posseses them to always want to be in, on, or under something?

Alot of cats feel more safe in smaller places rather than say just a corner of the room or in the middle of the floor. Our cat seems to split his time between trying hide out and observe everything and laying right in the middle of the living room. The laser pointer gets him every time; he's convinced he can catch the little red dot. He'll jump five or six feet high up the wall going after it... it's hilarious.

Sound waves. Cardboard has an almost unique ability to transport and resonate sound throughout the object it has been formed into, especially when being clawed at! Add to that the felines extraordinary hearing (an important tool for hunting) and you have an item that will arouse the ''killer instinct'' in any fearless house cat!

Becuase boxes (especially cardboard and wooden ones) are warm and cosy; the texture of cardboard or wood is very attractive to cats; and they make really cool hidy-spots. My cat will jump into a cardboard box as soon as I open one - even if that cardboard box is a shoebox and my cat is twice as big! He always looks silly in it, I assure you.

Yeah, my cats always did that too. I think cats enjoy taking over their own little area, as if they were ruling their own small country. My cat especially likes to cram herself into tiny boxes that she is obviously too big for. I know she's sitting in there just thinking "Mine, mine, mine!" Ah yes, bow down to the almighty cat!

they're weird, unfriendly, and did I say weird...dogs are so much better. I guess cats just like the boxes because they can easily tear them up.
