Great question, and those that believe in free will are going to have a hard time (looks like they have already) answering this dilemma --if they've answered it at all.
Or it could just be bad theology.
How about all of humanity deserving hell? That way God could destroy the entire population, men, women, and children, and be fully justified in doing so. But you must believe in original sin if this is going to make any sense. If we are innocent, or neutral agents in any part of our salvation, then we are right back to your criticism of a God that either doesn't care, or isn't capable, of taking care of his own creation.
It is only when free will is looked at in a negative light, i.e. a damaged man with only one destination instead of a choice, that we can start looking at man for who he is, and at God for who he is. And once the ability to look to God for salvation is removed, we give God the space that he needs to predestine, foreknow, call, save, and keep His own. We call that love vs. a justified wrath, and if you read the Bible in that way, God may not be the lovable cuddly fuzzball that some people believe (and want) him to be, but I think it's a little bit more accurate picture of the Almighty.

Look, it's your choice on weather your Christian or not so when you say "what about the rest of us who aren't Christian", it's not God's, nor our(Christians) fault that you choose not to love him. Free will is based on choices. You have the free will to love God or not, to be Christian or not, and to go to hell or not. That's what free will is. God made us for the sole purpose of worshiping him. If you choose to not to worship him then it's your choice, or in other words, your free will. To me , this sounds like a classic case of:"I'm an adult. I don't have to listen to anyone. I'll do what I want not what someone else wants me to do." and also: "it's not fair that they get to go to heaven and I don't" This is no stereo type but fact; all atheists/ non-believers have this personality about them that they think they are adults, and that no one is going to tell them what to do!
It's all very childish! Grow up and stop acting like a baby!

free will has nothing to do with god or with heavens...
Man is condemned to make a choice in every second of his life. Some choices are good for him and some arent. Whether he is fully aware of the consequences of his choices is more important than whether he has free will or not. He may sincerely think that the option he chooses is good for him and for mankind but it may come out the other way around. At such cases he cant be held responsible. The problem is that most of our choices are made in full ignorance of the consequences.

This is a common misconception that you have to act good and do good deeds to get to heaven all you need to do is accept him into your heartand all your sins are forgiven;past present and future sins. Once Jesus is in your life you will always have him their for you. Alsoyou can have fun worshiping. Church is so often portrayed as a dull boring place we have a youth group and we do all kinds of things; play basketball, floor hockey....So its not a matter of you being good and having to be a perfect person you simply have to ask forgivness and believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins; he took the punishment for you. I hope i helped you with your question. Ohh and by the way hes not letting them go to hell they have the choice and the oppertunity to go to heaven if they would accept him into their lives. ITS NOT GODS FAULT ITS YOURS AND MINE that we cant tell everybody but as a christian you try to tell others.

Free will is a myth.
People always tell me that I will choose heaven or hell, or that I will either love God or hate him.
I don't love God, but I don't hate him. I don't choose heaven or hell.
I rather when I die, I can cease to be for eternity. God doesn't give me what I want, I guess.
This means God will be forced to choose heaven or hell for me, since I never chose. Saying not choosing heaven is choosing hell, is as foolish as presenting a kid with both a pink & green crayon then saying that not choosing the pink means he chose green.
If the kid never chose, he never chose, end of story.
If I am forced to choose either heaven or hell, he is still breaking my "free will" by imposing his over my own. Either way, human free will is destroyed.

Either Christians are right and God is a sadist. If that is the case I will go to hell with my head held high knowing I am better than God.
Or the fundimentalists are way of and they have no clue who God is.

Such antagonistic dialogue... still, I'll address this. God made Satan because without Satan, man would have no alternative than to worship God. It means more to God that we worship him IN SPITE of the alternative. We won't be "kiss God's holy a** for the rest of my life" in heaven. Heaven = paradise.

He's not telling anyone to go to Hell. Thats just where they'll end up, thats all. He doesn't want ANYONE to go to hell, duh, He loves us all! Its just that some people have rebelled, and there is nothing God can do about it, because He gave them the free will to do so. Its a GREAT case of free will in my opinion. What would you prefer, free will to say you don't believe in God but you still get all the rewards of believing in Him? Thats just silliness.

Monica, I am sure Jesus would be so proud of you *COUGH*
Anyway, you raise a valid point. Many religions don't offer enough choices at all...and the few choices are often extreme.

You have the same thing here... You don't have to go to prison but if you don't obey societies laws you will. You don't have to obey God's Laws either but if you don't expect that you will be judged by Him... Jim
