Actually it depends on what you want to paint… Van Gogh use to use only watercolor brushes because of the stiffness…. Even for oils….

Kolinsky Sable is suppose to be the best…

Personally I like and choose overall… MONGOOSE… They hold up well and I find are stiffer than sable.

I’ve had some of my paintbrushes for 20 years… With the correct care your brushes will last a very long time….

Hi:

Check out an art store for brushes if you want to get a hands on feel for them. Probably, if you want to work with acrylics or oil on a canvas surface, you'll want to get a little stiffer hairs in the brush. Sable brushes are usually considered to be the best, but I really like the white acrylic brushes for all sorts of work, including oils to watercolors. Check out Jerry's Artarama and Art Supply Warehouse, Dick Blicks for online, and they routinely have sales or free offers with other purchases that may interest you. Michael, Hobby Lobby and Joann's hobby and craft stores have art sections with a selection of brushes, but check out the online stores for the most comprehensive selection.

Hope this helps.

Cheap ones. If you are just starting out on canvas, just get some stiff bristle brushes in various shapes and sizes from a craft store. Brushes can get real pricey, so start small and get the hang of what size/shape brushes will give you which effects before you spend hundreds of dollars.

kandinsky sable are the best. but they are mostly used for portrait painting. I usually buy brushes that are stiff but not to stiff, stay away from the ready made sets. I like filberts the best because they havew two edges and a point on the top.
I use robert simmons brushes about $5 each

It all depends on what type of paint you're going to be using.
