Sorry Tercel*** mine have that notch. I have been issued them many times, 1965, 67, 70, 73, 75,80. Each time they had the notch. I had heard the same story about being able to kick it between the front teeth on a corpse. To me it just made a better screw driver.

Modern Dog Tags do not have the "notch" on them; that was on the older WW2 era Dog Tags. There is a recurring myth about the notch situated in one end of the dog tags issued to United States Army personnel during World War II. It was rumored that the notch's purpose was so that if a soldier found one of his comrades on the battlefield, he could take one tag to the commanding officer and kick the other between the teeth of the soldier to ensure that the tag would remain with the body and be identified. According to Snopes, the notch is there simply to hold the tag in place on the embossing machine.

I was issued dog tags in 1981, 1987, 1991, and again in 2000. None of mine were notched. Just a smooth oval.

don't think you really want to know, but the graves and registration people use that notch to prop the dog tag in the body's mouth,so the body's identification stays with the person.
You have two, and the second is taken for recordkeeping purposes

Mine was smooth with rounded edges. It has a hole for the chain. It has to be worn so there will be nothing that can hurt you or cause you discomfort.

That is the way they were cut in WW2. Now they are rounded on the end.
