I think that God made the world and He delights in our exploring it and discovering the marvelous complexities He's hidden throughout creation.

Lol... SOme of the ridiculous answers!
OK. First of all it depends on what you believe, personally, being a Catholic and also not a total idiot and blind to fact, I know that evolution is real. Now, you can say that evolution is merely a tool of God, that is fine. That is not at odds with religious teaching that God created everything. In fact, some people say that evolution is so amazingly intricate that somthing like God must be behind it.
There is no "why" as to the evlution of viruses. Basically, about 4 billion years ago, different molecues started randomly forming chains of proteins called amino acids. Over time, applying the Darwinian maxim of survival of the fittest, the best and strongest chains of these amino acids survived. Eventually, through random occurances, these simple molecules discovered how to replicate themselves by combining in different ways to form RNA. (DNA is a further evolved version of RNA)
Viruses don't have DNA, they have RNA. The reason for this is that Viruses are one of the most ancient lifeforms on Earth. We have a common anscestor with viruses.
Viruses evolved from these chains of amino acids called RNA. the chemical constituents of RNA caused chemical reactions which created a thin sheath of protein around the virus to protect the RNA inside.
How viruses used to work, was that they would attack a bacterium, and inject the RNA into the bacterium. The RNA from the virus would reprogramme the Bacterium cell and tell it to produce more bacteria RNA, very like a modern computer virus.
Viruses aren't always bad, just like bacteria can be quite helpful. Not all viruses affect humans at all, and many only affect harmful species. WIthout viruses the populations of many species would be uncontrollable, and the ecosystem would have crashed a long time ago.
Whether or not you choose to beleive in evolution however, is a matter for yourself. I think you can believe in evolution and God at the same time... The catholic church does.

Viruses are just RNA coated with protein. Not all viruses are harmful. They're not even living or made up of cells.
Actually, you don't really know. Viruses don't fossilize well, so there aren't any traces of them that can help scientists find the cause. It's possible that they evolved (or technically, it's reverse evolution) from bacteria such as Chlamydia.
It's also possible that there were viruses since the beginning of time, biblically, and they did not affect Adam and Eve because humans didn't become vurnerable to them until after the fall of man, when sin caused genetics defects to occur.
Neither make that much sense, actually.

Viruses infect a wide variety of organisms: both eukaryotes (animals, yeasts, fungi, and plants) and prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea).
Therefore they existed at the time of life on earth was created (3rd creation day starting with plant life).
The first humans were made perfect (hence their large life spans) and were not effected by the environment until they sinned.
By sinning they lost perfection and the ability of resisting viruses, bacteria, sickness, and finally Death.

The virus evolves, but it is still a virus. This is variations not evolution, when the virus changes into a totally different thing, then i'll accept evolution. You mix half truth with evolution and proclaim that it must be true, stop pestering us and go find some actual evidence.......

Viruses have been there. Every one of us has cancer in our bodies. Something causes the cancer to come out in some people. It is the same with viruses, I believe.
