Why is the # symbol (found on telephone keypads) called the pound symbol?

I always thought the abbreviation for pound was "lb". This is certainly true in the United Kingdom anyway

Well because it is used as a symbol for pounds (as in force).

However, the official name of the # symbol is the "octothorpe".
