I have a 7 week old Yorkie and he has the habit of biting everything. When I hold him he bites me ( even though it doesn't hurt because his teeth are barely coming out) but I just want to put in end to that habit before it gets worst. So is there anything I can do? or is that common with most pups? As you can see I'm a newbie when it comes to taking care of a pup..=/

It is very common with all puppies. The only way to get them to stop is if they start, say a firm "NO" and ignore them for a few minutes. Do not pet them, do not play with them, do not talk to them. They have to realize that they do not get attention for this kind of behavior. This goes for playing as well!

My Chihuahua used to bite me and anything else that she could fit in her small mouth. This helped me with her biting problems.

1) I have also done some research on this subject and the biggest problem that most new puppy owners have is the "NO" command. This command does more damage then good. Here’s why.....

Puppies respond better to positive reinforcement. This means that they will want to be better if instead of saying "NO" say "good boy" or "good dog" this will make the puppy think that he would want to be a good. You can give them a pat on the head or you could give them a treat.

But what puppy owners don't understand is that if you just yell/snap (not saying that u are) then you are contributing to the problem. it's ok to teach them the "NO" command but it's better to do that in time when your puppy trust you and you feel more comfortable with your puppy.

2) Ok now another thing you can do is not to encourage this behavior. This means no aggressive playing with your bear hands. Like finger tug-a-war. (I know it's tempting but don't do it) this will only tell your puppy that it's alright to bite and that's play. In the long run this behavior can be very dangerous as an adult dog. It could seriously hurt a small child or another dog.

3) When your puppy bites make a loud and high pitch screech or a yell (this will shock and confuse your puppy and would more then likely stun your puppy enough to have them let go and then quickly substitute your hand with an appropriate toy).
Remembering not to do it too loud so that it hurts your puppy’s ears. A chew toy or a cold frozen baby teeter would work nicely (your puppy should be teething or about to teeth this will help your puppy with his gums). Then say "good boy"

I hope this helps you.

All puppies do this. But I agree that no teeth on the humans is never too early to teach. My lab is 6 months old now and never is allowed to put his teeth on us or our clothing. What we did was always have a toy with us when we handled him.The second he put his mouth on our hand we said no bite, then put the toy in his mouth and said good boy.I know this sounds simple, but by giving him an alternative we managed to have a win-win outcome.By the way,he has never chewed up things other than his toys and we believe it was the early training that if you chew it has to be your toy.good luck.

You can stop your puppy from nipping you in a kind way that won't make you have to punish him. Biting and nipping are normal and natural ways for a puppy to explore his workd, but this is one of the reasons why puppies are so much work : you really have to watcha pup constantly so that he doesn't grab the wrong things. Here's an article to help:

All puppies bite and chew. Get him a couple of toys and play with him and the toys until he gets to playing by himself. The most important thing is to keep him rawhide bones to chew on. He will still want to bite on you some to get you to play. Good Luck

This is what you should do:

Whenever he bites, yelp loud like a puppy, and turn your back to him. Its what his brothers and sisters would have done. They learn not to play with him if he would hurt them. Dogs, especially little ones, can't stand to be left alone, so eventually he'll learn not to bite.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but it really does work.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT YELL AT HIM, DO NOT SMACK HIM, DO NOT CURSE AT HIM, DO NOT PUT HIM IN TIMEOUT, ETC. Your dog does not understand that what he does is wrong, so he will not like you if you yell at him, or do any of the above. But, he will learn overtime that if he nips at you, you won't want to play with him. Thats the only way he'll learn.

when he bites, imitate the sound a puppy would make if their foot got stepped on. then just walk away from playing with them, then retry, it should really help its almost guaranteed

If possible put your hand around his nose/mouth and tell him "no"
Also all puppies chew. Get a few toys for him.

it might seem tough, but shake him off and don't give him attention. if you award him or acknowledge him, he might think it's acceptable to do this. when you take him out for walk he might jump on or bite others.

all f my dogs did that to me. i just thump them on the nose and tell them no when they did. not hard enough to hurt but enough to annoy them. it will only happen a few times and then they will stop
