If a tree falls down in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, will it still make a sound?
I believe that it does. I was wondering if you did or didn't, and why. I am also using this for a report in school, so please help me out!!!!

I think yes because the tree makes vibrations. so there doesn't have to be a noise.

I would say that a tree still makes noise upon impact regardless if there is anyone around to hear it. And we can prove this by merely looking at the tree. We know that everything makes SOME sort of noise when it comes in contact with something else. Seeing it on the ground is enough to give evidence to the fact that it DID make noise.
Questions like this one are similar to looking at a woman with painted finger nails and asking, "did she really paint her fingernails? Because no one was around to watch her do it." just because neither you nor anyone else actually witnessed her painting her fingernails, you can still safely assume that she DID paint them merely by looking at her fingernails for the evidence.
I hope your report goes well! If you want, you can quote me. But it's totally your call.

Since most of the other answers are "yes" I'll play the devil's advocate and say "no". Factually the falling tree will cause a disturbance in the air which we would define as sound. But this isn't a factual question - it is a philosophic question dealing with the nature of reality. If no one is there to hear that sound, define it as a sound, remember it, record it -- then did that sound really exist? Under these terms, the answer is no because no one was present to witness that air disturbance and define it as sound or noise. There is no proof and philosophy demands proof. If you are walking thru the woods and come upon a fallen tree, you can assume it made a sound when it fell but you cannot prove it. Just because you have seen and heard trees fall before does not prove anything.

...You know what? I always hear so many responses, but I believe it does. I mean like seriously just because no one is around to hear a baby cry doesnt mean its not crying. And if a tree falls it makes a noise. Sound waves are still produced even though they dont go into any ones ears.
Im pretty sure Im right!!!

Yes it makes a sound. It hit the ground causing vibrations. The vibrations are what we know as sound. So even if there was nothing in the near vicinity to hear this sound, it still occurs.

Of course it does, even though nobody was there at that moment.
Dogs and other animals can hear sounds that we cannot pick up with our own ears. Does that mean there is no sound from a particular source? No, it just means that our ears only pick up a certain range of frequencies.
Sound is anything that can be heard, whether anybody is there to hear it or not.

Sound is not relative to someone being there to hear it, even though the question implies that it is.
It's like water running when you are home, and the same water running when everyone is out. Same sound. Different circumstances.
If a hearing impaired person was in a house alone and was singing, would he make a sound? Sure he would! His voice works, even if no one is home to hear it.
Hope this clears it up for you.

Yes it does. It will still make a sound because it fell. It doesnt matter if anyone hears it or not.

No. No one is there to hear it. How do you know it made a sound when NO ONE is there?? you can't feel vibrations because no one is there . . . you can't prove anything because no one is there. The tree didn't make a sound.
