We'd rather a girly book since she has two older brothers and tons of toys but no feminine books for her own library.

I agree w/ the book party idea. Is she into princesses, ballerinas, or things like that? Could put in the invitation that it's a book party and some suggestions of books that you think she'd like. Then, decorate with a girly or book theme. Maybe, if there's going to be friends or youngsters, have a story hour or half hour with the kids while reading the books that she received???

Don't be shy about including it in the invitation. Just be creative, say something like.."help us build a library"... or instead of toys that break, we'd like books that will help build her knowledge. Most people are at a loss as to what to get a little one anyway, they'll love that you were thoughtful enough to include the tip. I"m mom to 3.

That's a great idea! You should write a poem when you create your invitations and do it that way! Say something about prefering girly books for her library... and maybe work in an author or two into the poem.
I like your idea A LOT!

Just add a line at the bottom. "We'd prefer books for our daughter's library to toys or other gifts."

But people will do what they want. I learned the hard way not to expect people to chose exactly what you think they should give your child.

i agree with making it a book party. That way you will be sure to get at least some books. You can make a book cake. (rectangle cake decorated to look like a book). if you do get many toys then i would take them back and get her some books.

You can't politely ask for anything. However, a lot of people will probably ask what you'd like for her or what she may be interested in. That would be a perfectly appropriate time to tell them you'd like to get her some books aimed towards little girls.

Why don't you have a book party? Put in there that you want to start a girl library and would love if people would add to it. Good luck
