Cloe, you ask really interesting questions but some of the ridiculous answers you get nearly makes me cry!!
First of all, yes, the universe is expanding, and MOST of the galaxies are moving away from eachother. Sometimes galaxies collide... Cloe, if there was perfect order in the universe, we wouldn't be here! The universe is dependant on chaos! Now if you beleive in god, you say that he created the big bang and the ensuing chaos, if not, it is your right to believe that something else caused the big bang. Either way, whether you think it was God or something else, it is pretty amazing to think of what was there before the big bang and how it happened.
Anyway, stars and galaxies were created by fluxuations in an inperfect universe. Matter and gravity and dark matter were not evenly or uniformly distributed throughout the universe. where there were concentrations of matter, the were drawn together, forming MASSIVE stars. The gravity inside these stars were so intense that they broke down the hydrogen and helium atoms from which they were made into heavier atoms, such as carbon (from which we are primarily made). Then they exploded, expelling the new atoms into the universe.
Galaxies crashing into eachother isn't a totally catostrophic event, you have to remember that when two galaxies collide, most of the stars DONT!!! They are millions of light years apart.
In any event, if they did.... It would repeat the process above of creating the elements for life and planet formation....
No scientist will tell you that the universe is in perfect order. The perfection of the universe is in its chaos.
(i'm a lawyer not a scientest, just a bit of a science nerd.)

Quite simple, the universe isn't a perfect order. What does that even mean??? If it means that the universe has to obey all the laws of physics, then galactic collisions are inevitable. Galactic collisions are nothing more than the laws of physics being carried out.

Actually the galaxies are not colliding, they are moving away from one another and the universe is getting colder!
