"Beget" means to "give birth to," as in:

"The idea that "more is better" begets the notion that three aspirins will cure a headache faster than two, but that isn't necessarily true."

Also, if you read the Bible, there are whole lists devoted to ancestry that say things like, "Japeth begat Moria, who begat Ruth."
