How much is an arm and a leg to you? If you do it yourself, you will save 50% of the cost. Maybe that will only cost you the leg then? Make sure you know what you are doing with the water proof membrane surrounding the shower and the drain. If you get those two things right, half your headaches will be gone.

Menards has a sale going on right now through 3/11 on shower stalls. Cheapest walls are the 5 piece wall set for $89 which include 2 shelves and a towel rack. A 36x 36 shower base to match is $98. Drains are fairly cheap enough as are the 2x4's for framing the walls. One note though, if you are looking for a one-piece unit, make sure to measure your doors to see if it can fit through them for installation. I almost made that mistake! Good luck!

I would definitely call a plumber to install the vinyl shower pan, drain and shower valve, your home is too valuable to risk water damage. Other than that the rest of the job is stud framing, a small wet bed on the floor pitched toward the drain, wonder board or hardibacker board on the walls and some tile, doing this part yourself will probably save you about 6 or 7 hundred.
