1- It can delete a part of the genetic code, shifting everything over, so a stop codon (let's say its UUU, I can't remember) that worked in the ATG UUU sequence would be misread if something was deleted: AGU UU? <-- 3/4 chance there's no stop codon now
2- It can change the base. This can lead to beneficial, harmful or no effect.
3- It can add a base, and the same effect for deletion would occur.
