Branding is not really common but it is slowly getting its foot in the body mod community. Though its not new by any means, it is still taboo. You will want to do research for people highly skilled and qualified for this procedure if you wish to get it done
When done by someone skilled, safe and reputable you shouldn't have problems however, there can be complications with keloids, infection and an uneven brand if the artist doing this is not careful and if you don't take care of it.

Brandings are becoming more popular and are fairly common within the body modification community. Make sure you go to an expierenced artist, and see pictures of fresh and healed work.
They are pretty safe. They have their own set of risks, including excessive keloiding, infection, etc. Same as any scarification. Check out www.bmezine.com for pics, experiences and to find an artist in your area. They also have some great FAQs on the subject

I took an ag class when I was in college. We had to brand calves (and castrate, and medicate, and tattoo them, as well). It broke my heart when I had to do the branding. The calves (yearlings, so they were big) screamed a high-pitched woman-like scream and their flesh smelled like hamburger meat cooking.
Whew! Cured me of ever wanting to work with farm animals. Now, why on earth would you want to put your own self through a branding?

They're common with fraternities. They can be safe with certain precautions.

Go to a burn unit and ask them if they enjoyed it, as that is basically what you are doing to yourself.
