My hair was dark blonde and I dyed it black. I used a 28-wash dye, but I don't think it'll wash out like it's supposed to and I don't want it black for more than I need it to be (it's for a costume). Is there a stripper or color restorer I can use--or something?

Try using a brown color wash. It will help off set the blackness, and it will improve the overall color while the black gradually washes out.

You're not going to be able to use much. Baby shampoo is really good at stripping/fading color, wash it a few times a day but, do NOT forget a good conditioner, as the baby shampoo will dry out your hair. Some hair absorbs dye easier and more permanently than other hair, and going from black back to dark blonde is quite a lot of fading to do.
Stripping your hair with chemicals made especially to remove hair color will remove ALL hair color, even your natural color, and you'll have to dye it back. Dying it back after stripping is really hard because the base tone of the dye will look different on stripped hair than dyed or natural hair.
Also, don't try re-dying your hair or you'll end up with a horrible mess. If you're really, REALLY bugged by it, call or go into a salon and ask them if they can help or reccomend anything. Other than that, just be patient and use the baby shampoo. Also, if you'd like a great way to get a darker hair color without altering your natural color, especially for a costume, it's always best (and easiest) to go with a wig, LOL. Trust me, I've learned the hard way too. (Spent 4 weeks of my junior year in high school with reddish streaks because of this exact same thing, LOL)
Try the baby shampoo!

You should be able to remove it by using a "Clarifying Shampoo" (Nexus makes one called aloe rid)use it a few times until you think you will be happy with the results. this shampoo will contain more detergent than a normal shampoo which will also cause the hair to be dry so afterwords you will want a nice moisturizing conditioner to put the moisture back into the hair.

If this doesn't get you the results you want, Nexus also makes a crystal clarifying treatment that you would mix with water and process as directed, the crystals will be even stronger than the shampoo but will require a moisturizing conditioner afterwords also.

Hope that helps!

* Color strippers are ONLY for permanent dyes and will act as a weak form of bleach, which will leave the hair with an orange tint, do not use a color stripper on semi/demi permanent color, it is just un-necessary damage.

Feel free to email me with any questions. If the shampoo doesn't work for you there is one other thing you can do that may work, but only as a last resort. I'll let you know what that is if you need more help, but the shampoo should do it.

The very best thing you could do to get back to your natural color and save your hair from some pretty bad damage, is to go to a salon that specializes in color. Pay the money and get someone good to remove that black dye. Its the best way, believe me.

When you use a demi-permanent color it usually washes out in 28 shampoos but when you put a darker dye on a lighter color it becomes permanent. You can either have the color removed professionally or grow it out the same as you would any permanent color.

Ive done that before, it didnt wash out very easily. Just use a basic shampoo, and wash wash wash wash wash wash! if its still not out, there are strippers out there. Since i live in new zealand and im guessing your in america or something like that, i cant recommend any brands.

try going to a beauty supply store, they sell dye that is just clear so it should strip the color you have on your hair now with out changing your natural hair color. this is not a guarantee though, so it may not work and you will either have to go to a salon or just let it grow out.
