Jesus told us in John 6 that we are to eat his body and drink his blood. He said this six time...no where else in the Bible does he repeat something six times...so it seems that it must have been very important. We also know this was a literal meaning because the passage says that many were upset by what he said and walked away. Surely if it was a metaphor, Jesus would have told them, but he didn't...because it wasn't.
Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper. He gave the desciples bread and wine saying "...this is my body...this is my blood..."
Catholics believe in transubstantiation...this means that even though the appearance of bread and wine remain the same, the properties have changed and actually become the body and blood of Christ. This is a miracle.
Jesus told us unless we eat his body and drink his blood we cannot have life within us.

Life is in the blood.
Mark 14:24 - And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Luke 22:20 - Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
John 6:53 - Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
John 6:54 - Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:55 - For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
John 6:56 - He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
1 Corinthians 11:25 - After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
1 Corinthians 11:27 - Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

It deals with transubstantiation which means that the wine retains its own form but it is indeed the "blood of Christ".

For me the act of communion means that I identify with what he did for me on calvary over 2000 years ago. I do it so I won't forget his ultimate sacrifice.
