Gen 1:7-8
And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

If we look at this verse knowing what we know today through science it makes sense. Clouds are made of water vapor that has evaporated from the surface waters. So that is a separation of water on the earth and water in the sky... Bible's ahead so far.

Many have interpreted these verses to mean that the sky itself is made of water. That we have a dome of water over us.

That's just the problem with the Bible, it's very interpretable. I've only come to this conclusion because i know the science behind the water cycle. The authors of this book didn't know that stuff... Is that really what they meant?

Of course, we can't expect the book to be scientific. It does classify bats as birds.

I just noticed a flaw in my interpretation... The clouds are not above the firmament... What exactly is the firmament? The atmosphere?

Ah forget it... I'll just do what other Christians do, it's in the Bible it must be right. We can't let minor details get in the way of our faith now can we?

Do you think that the Israelites knew that bats were not birds? Perhaps God speaks to people in terms that they understand. Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven being at hand and is now. Once one accepts Christ the kingdom of Heaven is inside each believer.

I think "the firmament' may refer to the outermost atmosphere. "The waters below" are a seeming reference to the oceans and such on the Earth's surface, and "the waters above" may refer to the water/ice of the outer atmosphere.

Have you not read?

Luke 17:20 - 21 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

The kingdom of God is not some place you find without but within! It is just like Buddhism. Look within you are the Buddha. These two religions are saying the exact same thing!
