I don't have a fear of going to the dentist but I have worked for one for 13 years.

The best advice I could give to people that are afraid to go to the dentist is to find one that offers Sedation Dentistry. Generally with S.D. the doctor will prescribe you a couple medicines to take before you come in for your appointment. The meds are supposed to relax you, NOT knock you out as nitrous oxide does.

We have patients who are terrified to come into the office. Some of them haven't been to a dentist in more then 20 years because there fear is so acute. But when they take the medicine they can come right in, sit right down and are as calm as can be.

Often times patients don't even remember they were at the office at all. We have one patient who calls the day after her appointment to ask if she did anything wacky or weird because she honestly doesn't remember.

Another patient needed an 8 unit bridge as well as almost every tooth on his lower arch restored. He hadn't been to visit a dentist in 35 years!!! We gave him the meds, scheduled a WHOLE day just for him and spent 8 hours getting him all fixed up. He literally SLEPT through part of the procedure. Nothing phased the man, not the drill, not the needles, nothing.

Anyhow...I would highly HIGHLY recommend Sedation Dentistry to anyone who has a fear of going to the dentist. It is truly a God send.

I had some not great experiences as a kid with the dentist. It wasn't until as an adult I found myself going to a dentist I could finally trust. I'm a super chicken when it comes to going to the dentist! However, it needs to be done. The one I found, I actually went to every six months for a cleaning (I no longer live in the area of my favorite dentist). It was nice to be told no cavities, see you in 6 months! Are you afraid of pain? Does the numbing stuff work for you? It's the shot to numb you don't like? Or the sound of the drill? I didn't like any of that stuff either. But, going to the dentist is a neccessity. It is also for the general health of your entire body that you go to the dentist. My dad told me several years ago, go in, when in the chair, close your eyes, think on other things. It helped.Or, if your dentist will allow, take a headset to listen to while the work is getting done. That helps distract you too. Just not too loud. And, feel free to ask your dentist questions, like what each drill does, etc. It's your body, you have the right to ask the questions, as long as you don't use it as a stalling tool. Take care.

When you make the appointment, let them know that you have that phobia. Many people share that same phobia, and dentists are aware of that. But, if they know ahead of time, they will give you something to totally relax you... and it will not harm you. When the dentists starts his/her woirk, you will feel calm and secure.

I'm scared to death of the dentist!! I would rather do ANYTHING than go through that door!! I had a bad previous experience, have you? Just try to relax before you go, don't go when you feel rushed or stressed over other things, and think of the great smile you will be rewarded with!!

my dad does. he gets sooo freaked. i had to go with him last time and it was annoying. i had to stay seated next to him. he can't there alone . it is annoying especially i had a huge test the following day so i really had to go and study.

but nothing bad will happen if you have a good dentist. i like my dentist so i don't mind going. and think of it this way--if you want to have a nice smile (nice teeth) you need to go or your teeth will be all rotted, which makes going to the dentist sooo worth it.

specific, I even have the comparable form of phobia, in fact I concern any interaction with human beings, nicely not concern it, yet dread it because of the fact i'm this form of frightened, stressful individual around others. the only thank you to recover from it rather is purely to maintain doing it. until now I call every physique, i bypass over what i visit declare or what i choose to ask, and picture of their reaction (ex. a pizza guy would desire to not say lots, however the well being care provider's workplace would be asking questions) so i think of of the solutions to their reaction until now calling. it form of feels slightly severe, inspite of the undeniable fact that it rather is who i'm, somebody that gets stressful whilst speaking to human beings. good success.

I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of the world is afraid of going to the dentist.

Why?

All those pointy objects..little mirrors....strange big xray machines...drills...AHH!!

So you're not alone.

But as long as you've been flossing once a day and brushing your teeth AND gums at least twice and have been using mouthwash, you shall be fine!

Good luck!
