If one held that this jesus fellow had some wise things to say& lived their life in accordance w/his teachings, but they did not think he was god, or even the son of god, or maybe even doubted that he existed, but think if he did then he was 'just' a wise & enlightened man (like buddha)... would that person still go to hell?

ross-- yes, this is a hypothetical question, i was wondering the importance to christianity & how "accepting christ" is interpreted. and i am curious to what the christians believe about this.
personally, i do believe if he existed he was much like buddha. and though i am not perfect, i try to live my life in a way that is quite parallel to what jesus taught (not that i 'follow' him or any religion).
so i was wondering if christians would still think i'm going to heaven, what their criteria are.

EXCELLENT question.
I say this all the time. If there's any moral value in Christianity at all, it does not and cannot have anything to do with the life of a man who may or may not have actually walked the planet 2,000 years ago, save insofar as he left us his teachings and lived and died in example of the virtue thereof.
"Religious" people, meanwhile, make religion about forcing themselves to believe impossible, ridiculous things, on the grounds that doing so works some kind of magic trick in which they get off for all their "sins" and land a good seat in the Afterlife. And in case that's not sufficient incentive, the flipside is that if they don't believe these things, if they refuse to take mythology for history and dogma for science, and the bible for their sole textbook on all subjects - then to Hell with 'em.
"Faith" before "good works!" "All our righteousness is as filthy rags."
It's the ultimate insult that God would create man with the faculty of discerning truth, and then punish him for using that faculty; endow him with a conscience, and then insist that imbecile theology should take precedence over morality.
Of course, I don't believe that God actually did this. My problem is with religion, not "God."

Yes. Jesus is God. What He tough was the Word. So is short He taught a lot about who He is. John 1:1. Jesus is the Word. There is no other way to Get to Father God except by Jesus. Its Only through salvation by Faith in Jesus that you even have a shot at remotely getting into heaven. Its by grace. If you don't believe on the Lord Jesus Christ how can you then be granted salvation that only comes through Him?

Yes, because Jesus is God who became man for a season. He died on the cross bearing the sins of the world. When I do something wrong, sin, I feel awful. To think that I would have to feel that grief from all of humanity is unthinkable for a human being to do. Jesus lived the talk. He set an example for us of what perfection is and once saved, by accepting Him as your savior, we follow his teachings the best we can. Slip ups happen all the time, and we repent of them and pray not to sin again. I can believe anything I want, that doesn't mean I will go to heaven. One has to be saved to go to heaven, otherwise the destination is the hot south.

We know Jesus existed by what he taught; same with Pluto and Socrates.
The importance of Jesus is in his teachings.

for me what he taught because I am an Atheist. I look at Jesus as a philosopher, he is one of the greatest teachers that ever lived! it is rather silly to believe in supernatural begins wouldn't you say?

It is important in believing in ones heart in who Jesus Is and what He taught. Jesus Christ the LORD Is the foundation of the Church of Christ. What we build on the foundation that is everlasting are obedient acts from Gods Word rooted in Faith, Hope & Love.
Jesus said that He Is a greater Wisdom than Solomon. Also, to see the Kingdom of God, you must be born again. Born of His Spirit, cleansed by His blood, joint heirs with Jesus, part of the family of God.
A person goes to hell if they are presented the Truth of who Jesus Is, and the Love of God revealed, and they reject Gods saving Grace & God. It is God who reveals the Truth of Jesus to the hearts of mankind.
Some reject Gods love & Word when presented correctly, and that person will go to hell (if they don't repent & confess Jesus Christ Lord). Also, some who are religious but refuse to be born of God, will go to hell. Also, those who may be rich & talented but lead people away from Gods Saving Grace will go to hell fire. (Like Kurt Cobain, or John Lennon) And those who murder for their self-righteous causes (Allah, etc.) will go to hell fire.
Those who go to heaven, are those born of God, born of His Spirit, cleansed by His blood, joint heirs with Jesus, part of the family of God. Those born again. Being born of His Spirit is receiving everlasting life.
Those who go to a place of rest are those who called out for God, but never had their sins atoned for, so God received that person, but person went to a place of rest. An example is Anna Nichol.
Hearing about Jesus isn't really having a concept. A person needs to hear the Good News correctly and deny Jesus to end up in hell. And that person truely had rejected the love of God.
I think the first buddah is in a place of rest, because he never actually rejected Jesus Christ, in that it wasn't presented to him. But he was a seeker. I could be wrong, but that is my understanding when I prayed to God about it.

The importance is Jesus because who he was is the same as what he taught. He asks you to follow him, to learn from him.

Here's your answer in a nutshell....
"...CHRIST JESUS...who being in the FORM OF GOD, thought it not robbery to be EQUAL WITH GOD: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
(Philippians 2:5-8)
" In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word WAS God. .....And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us". John 1
" I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the Ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, The ALMIGHTY." - Jesus (Revel.1:8)

The importance comes in obeying what he said; even if there is not an act to clarify it!!!
