I got my first invitation to a quinceanera from my friend. I'm really confused, because hers is going to be really fancy, and I don't know what will be appropriate to wear. I asked her what I should wear, and she says something near a gown. What does she mean?
I also don't know what to give her. I'm not sure of what's appropriate to give at a quinceanera party. Like I said, I have no clue what to do and it's my first time.
Please just tell me ANYTHING a guest needs to know when going to a quinceanera. Thanx!

It is a big deal. Does your school have a semiformal? Ours had Winterfest and I would wear whatever I wore to Winterfest, to opening night of a play, or a cocktail dress. You don't have to wear something long and formal but I would not wear something like a sundress.

It will probably be a formal sit down dinner. You don't want to wear anything too sexy as most of her family will be there.
As far as what to get her--I wouldn't worry about it being so fancy but just get her something you would get her for her birthday if its werent a fancy event. What is she interested in? A book, a journal for her writing/sketches, something cute from Target... it's a party and she wants your presence, not your presents. She knows you can't afford that much.
What a guest needs to know--not sure what your ethnicity is--but this is the hispanic version of the Sweet Sixteen party. They will probably have music and dancing. She will probably have on a very formal outfit like a prom dress. She may change clothing half way through it. Eat the food! Quinceanera is such a big deal in a young woman's life that they often break out some of the more traditional food that takes a long time to prepare. It is fabulous and don't ask everyone around you whats in it. (if you don't have many food allergies) Just try it!

If the invitation says formal wear you should wear a cocktail dress (that is knee to tea length) if it says black tie you have to wear a long dress. Regarding the present you can give perfume, fancy cosmetics, or jewelry are common as it is a coming of age party. Good luck!

something nice that you would wear to church. Or you can just ask her how fancy she will expect you to dress. ask her to be more specific. Present. A simple gift certificate from a music or book store.
