They don't. But you can find lots of rationalizations provided by apologists.

The scholarly or academic view is that the editor of Genesis merged two different (yet similar) traditions - one from the northern Kingdom of Israel and one from the southern Kingdom of Judea -- each with their own tale of creation.

The fundamentalist or delusional view is that God wrote Genesis through Moses, dictating it word for word, and there is really only one creation story. We are not privy to understand God's higher purpose in making it seem as though there are two creation stories.

they are a zoom in

1 - THE CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE AND WORLD in Genesis 1

2 - FOCUSES ON THE CREATION OF MAN
in Genesis 2 and 3, this one also adds the fall of man and points toward to a redeemer

this is consistent with parallelism, going back to the early story stating it with a slightly different perspective

the Bible zooms in more around chapter 10 to focus on Abraham and his spiritual and physical descendents

There are 2 creation stories so that people will question the bible's validity and only the true believers will believe it. (I'm being sarcastic)

Great question :)

Actually, my understanding is that they're similar but don't compliment each other completely (one says humans were created early, the other late...etc.)

I heard one guy say that earth was created, wiped clean, and created again...but I haven't read the stories thoroughly enough to say I agree or not.

Are you refering to Genesis where GOD makes Man, then Later, where GOD makes Adam and Eve?
Read Ecclesiastes chap.1, I Believe that the Earth has been around 4 to 5 Billions Years.
The "Man"--(male man and female man) GOD Created first, coulda been on the Earth YEARs befor Adam and Eve showed up.
Ditto...............
