I'm pretty sure the distributor is driven off the camshaft. If you look in the oil filler, can you see the rockers moving as the engine is cranked?

If the rockers don't do anything, then get the timing chain cover off and check the timing chain and gears. That should be on the front of the engine. A Chiltons or Haynes manual, or a real Ford shop manual will help a lot.

I'm pretty sure that the 4.9L is gear driven with no chain. Either a gear has stripped or broken, or the camshaft is broken.
I had a 4.9L that the pin that holds the gear on the distributor shaft sheared off. It made the gear slip on the shaft.

You can go to http://www.ford-truck.com and check out the 4.9L engine forum . Lots of good info there. It's free :)

gear is actualy part of the camshaft timing chain or broken cam bad news dont see many broken chains they get out of time big time but hardly ever break ck your cam cuz pull your rocker cover and see if all your little wigglies are working thats what my baby daughter calls them says my racing motor is full of wigglies Later
