Because your mouth is full of bacteria that have been busy for 8 hours or so. You should brush them after you eat as well.

Mouth breathing and sleeping can cause plaque to build up on your teeth, so that's why your supposed to brush before you go to bed and when you wake up. Your supposed to brush after every meal, so in reality your SUPPOSED to brush when you wake up and then agin after you eat. But some people just wait to brush til after breakfast lol.

Hmmm. You brush your teeth to clear away plaque and bacteria from the night. You do it before eating breakfast, because the food will provide additional nourishment for any bacteria or plaque that you don't get rid of.

During the day, saliva is constantly formed, and you swallow regularly. However, when you are asleep, you do not swallow, and bacteria begins to form inside your mouth. And you know that bad taste, often associated with 'morning breath'? That's actually the smell of waste (urine) from the bacteria in your mouth. That is why it is important to brush your teeth before eating breakfast, because otherwise you will be swallowing all that nasty bacteria as you're eating. =)

Hope that helps!

Usually I eat breakfast first, but that's just me.

Think of it like this: when you sleep, you have all this crud centered around your teeth. When you sleep, you don't swallow so your spit becomes attached to your gums, your teeth, and tongue allowing it to potentially give you more bacteria.

Brushing your teeth clears your breath (EW MORNING BREATH!) and gets rid of unwanted bacteria and germs.
