because it makes them feel better to belittle something or someone so they dont have to think there might be some truth to the reality of a GOD.

Because there is no set Christian belief. Any claim I make about the beliefs of any particular Christian will be denied by another Christian.

Some Christians accept Evolution and believe God was the divine spark that started it all. Some Christians think that the 7 days of Creation corresponded to 7 billion years. Some Christians think the Universe was created in 7 literal days. It goes on and on, da da dum, da da dum...

Make a generalization about liberal Christians and conservative Christians will say that you've misportrayed Christian beliefs. Make a generalization about conservative Christians and liberal Christians will say that you've misportrayed Christian beliefs. But it doesn't stop there.....

...there are Catholics, Mormons, Protestants, Anglicans, Fundamentalist, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Non-Denominationals, Christian Scientists, just to name the tip of the iceberg.

Are there "Christian" beliefs? Which ones? The word Christian is a code word for evangelical...everyone else calls themselves Roman Catholic Lutheran, Greek Orthodox etc. You can't help but misportray Christianity because there is so little objective structure to these beliefs.

Some really don't know and are repeating what they hear. Some do know, and are surprisingly more clear on what scripture says than some that say they are Christians. One thing both miss is understanding of the Word, explaining why they (non-believers) are not Christians and why those that say they are, need to go back and read with prayer.

Why do Christians constantly misportray Atheist beliefs?

2007-03-07 18:51:33 · answer #5 · answered by FaerieWhings 7 · 8 1

Such as?

It's quite clear that atheists understand Christians and Christianity FAR better than Christians understand atheism.

If atheists' understanding of Christianity were as poor as Christians' understanding of atheism, this place would be full of atheists asking things like "Why are Christians so in love with mud?" and "Why do Christians believe that pizza is evil?". If you're scratching your head over where those examples came from, you know what it's like to listen to Christians try to characterize atheism.

Gee, there's an example just below: "Lizzie" reaches down behind herself and pulls out "they are atheist they dont care if they live or die". Er, huh?

And then Steven reaches into his own "special place" and pulls out "because it makes them feel better to belittle something or someone so they dont have to think there might be some truth to the reality of a GOD". Right.

And then "Mrknowitall" pulls out the old "For folks who don't believe in anything...", probably honestly having convinced himself that's what atheism is all about.

Doesn't take 'em long to make my point for me, does it? Three Christians eager to shoot arrows at atheists, but utterly clueless about what direction to aim - all winding up shooting themselves in the foot.

Every individual christian has their own set of interpretations and beliefs regarding their religion.

Just because an atheist might describe a set of beliefs that AREN'T YOURS, doesn't mean other Christians don't hold to them.

Considering there are more the 10,000 christian sects, I think you argument has no basis.

Btw, most atheist were once theist, and most atheists in the US were once christian.

Why do Christians constantly misportray atheists in general?

2007-03-07 18:50:33 · answer #8 · answered by Stardust 6 · 10 1

Because they get tired of Christians mis-portraying Christian beliefs. Jesus didn't hate gay people, discriminate, or even touch on many of todays societal problems... The real question is why do people quote things from the bible that aren't there or are taken out of context?

Ok I won't misportray, but I need some guidance regarding one detail of your belief:

Was Jesus nailed because he wasn't hung?
