I was at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for boot camp for the Army, and I thought the food was great. Actually, I also think that our DFAC was recognized that year for having outstanding food. I have also been to Fort Jackson, SC, and I was also deployed to Iraq and Kuwait. Honestly, I think the best food was when I was eating at the KBR dining facility (DFAC) in Kuwait.

Fun things about boot camp:

-bonding experience was great, within 2 weeks, everyone feels like your brothers and you know absolutely everyone in your platoon, and everyone knows you. Everyone is generally cool with each other unless you're one of the fuckups, and there is usually only 1 or 2. Even the fuckups were kinda cool, even though the drill sergeants picked on them.

-getting to learn how to use military weapons: throwing grenades, firing M16's with gas masks, firing light machineguns on full auto, firing grenade launchers, those are all irreplaceable lifetime experiences

-Learning how to fight: depending on your drill sergeant, they'll teach you all of these street fighting techniques that you'll carry with you, and even now I still remember the different grabs they showed us.

-Getting into the best shape of your life

-I was lucky enough to be in a co-ed company, and we actually had two good-looking girls in our unit, so it was always a turn-on seeing them doing the same combat stuff as the guys.

In Marine Boot, you get 3 well balanced meals. Some will reflect the South ( Parris Island, SC) such as bread budding and vanilla sauce..Mmmmm and the ever favorite SOS.
Most times you are so worn out or excited, you don't remember.
Fun?? I had 8 weeks of absolute playtime...Running, PT, Rifle Range, burying sand fleas, standing at attention for hours. Not to mention, having someone in my face 18 hours a day..Ahhhh the good old days....
Got about 3 hours a nite of "free time" Cleaned rifle, scrubbed clothes, studied, scrubbed the head, scrubbed the squad bay, police the area, polish boots, and write letters.

They serve regular meals. Most if not all the food service operations are contract civilian. There is a 14 day menu which is driven by what people like, etc... Some have a short order line which cranks out burgers and taco's. But you have to remember that the military has a height & weight program - if you are over weight according to a set height/weight scale - you will be put on a diet and if you don't make it - bye, bye. Also remember that you have a specific time to get in, eat and get out. So if you aren't finished too bad.

The food is as good as any other mess hall.

As for what's "fun" in basic training.....being challenged. Completing your first five mile run without falling out is fun. The last step of a 12-mile road march is fun. Switching the selector lever to "3-round burst" is fun. Having your platoon beat all the other platoons on the obstacle course is fun.

And of course, the MOST fun is the graduation parade.

The food is'nt bad at Camp Jackson. Some stuff is fun, like learning to shoot, bayonet course, confidence course. You will make a lot of friends there, which really helps get through it all. Have fun.

Foot Served to basic trainees at Fort Sill is first rate. All the cooks are civilians, and I can assure you, its better than what I got 25 years ago.

I'm no expert, but I thought that boot camp wasn't supposed to be "fun."
