So we invaded Iraq with the promise of a crushing blow, by the Saddam. What exactly did the Iraqi military do and where are they? Whatever happened, the lack of heavy engagement with them did not present an easy victory. Did Saddam have the bloody anarky that currently ennsues in Iraq in mind?

I am addign these details because I made soeme typos and it seems that not too many people understand the qeustion. Saddam promissed a crushing blow to invading forces. This did not happen, what exactly happened to the Iraqi military when Iraq was invaded in 2003? What was Saddam thinking, did he anticipate the current situation? I think it is important to figure out how we went in fighting a modern military that almost immediately became non-existant and we are to this day deal with endless bloody anarchy? What exactly happened here? Lex, you say you are USAF, how did you misinterperet my question, I would like your feedback on my questions.

The Iraqi military "melted" away. With our complete and utter control of the air, they had no chance to fight back. Also, satellite intelligence was unavailable to them, unless the Soviets were providing it. Also, our weaponry: bunker busters, artillery, tanks, etc. were so much better than their own, standing and fighting would have been suicidal for his army units.
Some of them are in the various militias, and some are in the insurgency. That the country would be beset by anarchy of the type we're seeing presently, is something that probably won't be resolved short of a nasty, brutal and vicious "civil" war, between Shia, Sunni, and the insurgents, who will probably not go away, but will hang around to see who is winning, and decide to be on one side or the other. We should just step aside. The Iraqis seem to want this constant bloodshed.
We can just beat the crap out of the winner.
Hey, Lex: the question was NOT about the army the Iraqis are fielding NOW, it was about the armed forces under the command of Hussein! Read more carefully, next time, before you rush to show off that you're in Iraq.

"The Iraqi military "melted" away. Some of them are the militia, and some are in the insurgency"
NOOOOOOO.... they have a proper Army and they are doing their best to help the situation in their country. They are working side by side with Coalition Forces, which is one of the main reasons we are still there-- to make sure they, along with Iraqi Police, know how to take over the security issues that we've been handling the past few years. Although there is corruption among all their security forces, the majority of them (just as the majority of civilians) want Iraq to be a peaceful, better place. However, as we all know, it only takes a few bad apples...
The Iraqi Army is trying hard to take over... they are targeted by insurgents as much as Coalition Forces are, so try to cut them some slack.
EDIT: I think it is absolutely charming that you people think you know so bloody much about the situation in Iraq... but you don't even know who we're fighting! We are not fighting their military... we are fighting insurgents/Al Qaeda.

no.
we did. His military is mostly dead. Shot to pieces by vastly superior firepower.
Whaddya mean "did not present an easy victory?" Been about the most lopsided major engagements in the history of warfare. What you have now (and this is what they consider themselves to be) a bunch of poorly trained, poorly equipped "patriots" that would rather die being a tiny, minor, pain in the a*ss than roll over for foreign occupation and exploitation.
Imagine that. They'll be crushed. And they know that. So did Sitting Bull and his boys.
They just wanted to go down swinging. Have one minute in the sun.
And there's no victory in any of this. Not for us, anyway. Nor for them. If you were one of the people that was going to benefit from any of this, you wouldn't have the time or inclination to post questions to this board. And you can bet your laser-guided bunker busting butt bombs on that.

The Iraqi military's a big joke. It's ill-equipped, underpaid, underappreciated, and unable to do the job that even its American counterparts CAN'T do: Contain an embedded insurgency, and keep the peace.

i think of that Hussein replaced into an evil and unsafe dictator who mandatory to be ousted in spite of if our intelligence replaced into incorrect approximately WM D's. yet i think of the lesson found out could be to offer up attempting to be u . s . builders. we could desire to have caught around until the Iraqi human beings chosen a clean chief and then gotten out of there. we could desire to offer up meddling interior the affairs of alternative countries with thoroughly diverse political and cultural differences.

Donald Rumsfeld disbanded the entire Iraqi army shortly after we invaded Iraq. Tragic mistake. Those jobless soldiers became the members of militia's that are killing our soldier's and civilian's.
