i am freaking out right now.. i made an appointment for tomorrow to cut my hair and get highlights.. i have several questions:
1) its in eatons centre in toronto, at a pretty respectable salon, are they gonna do a good job?
2) how do i go about paying? after he is done, do i give him his tip there in cash and then go pay the rest, or just do it all at the same time?
i am really scared right now about the results...

Just go to pay(with cash or card) and say add ten percent for yourself(it can be more than 10, but that's what I pay)

I am a stylist 25 yrs now. Tip for hairstylists is simply not the same as tipping at a restaurant. Go figure....

$60 Color she gives you about 2 hours of her time tops. She lives for her tips trust me here, they aren't all loaded unless they OWN the place and its real busy. Go 20 % for two hours or less anything more add a buck or two.

I worked at a really fancy salon and got paid $6.00 an hour. I cleaned the whole place spotless and was working up a clientele for two months when I just had to quit. The cuts cost $19 because I was new and most people gave me $5.00 no less.

Be sure to be specific about what you don't want as well as well as what you do want. Talk talk talk.

Calm down honey, it's just a hair cut. As long as you're SPECIFIC on what you want, they should do a great job. After you get done you'll pay. It's not a law, but it is nice to tip your stylist especially if he's done a good job. I tip about 5 bucks. If you really like it heck go 10, the better you are to your stylist the better they will be to you. You just might get to the point where you don't have to wait for an appointment. Just call ask for your dude tell him you need in . . he know you and likes you and will put a rush to get you there.

ok, well don't freak. you've come to a hair professional.
if you think the salon is reliable, it prob. is. most salons do good jobs. try bringing in a picture of how you want your hair to look and what colors, etc.
when you pay i'd pay at the desk for the cut and highlight with a check. and yes you leave a tip. it you're doing cut and highlight my the same person and they do it great. 5 dollars is good. it they do pretty good. 3 dollars is about right. i wouldn't go unser 3 though.

If the salon is pretty popular you can guarantee yourself they'll will have competent stylists. Be sure to communicate what you really want before a big chop. You should pay everything all at once to the stylist including the tip. Don't be afraid it's hair and if you don't like the results discuss options for styliing until your hair grows back.

This happened to me last year. I have dark brown hair, and I
wanted "golden brown, caramel, and copper highlights"--I
didn't want to look like a brunette who wanted to be a blonde.
Well, we must have had a communication problem, because
I came out with "golden"--(BLONDE) highlights! It looked stupid,
and I told the girl who did it I wasn't happy about it. Then when
I went out to pay, they asked me if everything was ok, and I
said, "Honestly, no it's not. Here's what happened...." and
then they not only re-did my highlights and got it right, but ALSO
they didn't charge me for any of it. So anyway, the thing is, to
communicate well, and also, say something if you're not happy.
They will try to make it right. They don't want you out there
telling everyone you know how mad you are, and then your
friends tell their friends, and you start scaring away clients.
Businesses like this depend on good word-of-mouth and
recommendations for future business. Plus there are so many
other places to go get your hair done, they don't want you to
go somewhere else, they want you to come back, and recommend other people to them, too.
At my salon, they don't allow tipping, but you could do it either
way. Either give it to him back in his booth area, or you can
add it on to your credit card or give it to them up front when you
pay and say, "This is for Michael" or whatever his name is, and
they will give it to him.

I don't know about #1, but # 2 is yes, tip the stylist and then pay for the service performed.

If it's a respected well maintained salon, cleanliness is key, then yes, I'm sure they will do a great job! I gave my hair dresser her tip in her magazine...as I was leaving I told her to look at the last page...the womans hair in that pic is beautiful...! lol She loved it!
