The wallpaper was there when I moved in. Before I go and spend money at the hardware store, how do I know what method is best to remove the wallpaper in my home?

Removing wallpaper sucks.

That being said, Depending on the type of paper, type of adhesive and the type of wall the paper was put on will determine the easiest way to remove it.

Usually, I scrap over the paper with a wall paper scorer (mines call "paper tiger" cost a couple of bucks) and use a liquid remover (I use DIF or DIF gel if it's really old paper) and a paint scraper. Takes time but it works.

Did I mention that removing wallpaper sucks?

At a paint or wallpaper store you can buy wallpaper remover. You mix it with water, soak the paper, and the paper comes loose.
If the old paper is vinyl coated, you will need a scoring tool. It is used to scrape the surface to put cuts in the vinyl so the remover can soak into the paper backing.
After cleaning up that sloppy mess, you will need some wallpaper paste remover. Mix a solution and wash down the walls until the paste is removed.

Get yourself wallpaper scorer (at the paint store or Wal-Mart). Score the paper then spray the wall with a mixture of warm water and liquid fabric softener. Let it soak in a bit, and scrape off.
It's not SUPER easy, but much better than anything else I've tried.

Several things, first determine the facing. If it is a vinyl or foil face then see if this will easily pull off. If it does then hot water should be applied to the backing and allowed to soak, when the backing starts to lift just pull that off as well. If the facing doesn't pull off then you will need to perforate it with a paper tiger and apply dif gel and allow that to work. Very time consuming. If the wall covering has a paper face then try with hot water first. If this doesn't loosen it then try the liquid dif. If you have clay adhesive it can be quite stubborn, use a course poly scrubber to clean the walls.

OUR METHOD SAVED US A PILE OF MONEY-OLD HOME REMEDY WORKS ON ONE OR 20 LAYERS. HOT WATER IN A SPRAYER, A BIG ONE, NOT HAND HELD. SPRAY ON AN AREA AND WAIT, THEN TRY TO SCRAPE WITH A PUTTY KNIFE. IF IT HAS DRYWALL BEHIND IT TRY TO BE CAREFUL, YOU'LL HAVE A FEW DENTS TO FILL IN ANYWAY. USE DRYWALL MUD.

unless the paper comes off easily with warm water, rent a steamer. it's really the only way to go and still keep your sanity
