I want to buy one on ebay but can't for the life of me find out what they're called. I'm talking about the basic, hundred-year-old dentistry tool that's just a thin metal shaft, slightly thinner than a pencil, with two hooked metal scrapers, one at each end. What is the name of this tool?

It would be a Gracie or a Scaler. If you want top of the line get a Hu Friedy.

If it is an exp. we call it a shepherd's hook, or it may be something else. There are hundreds of dental instruments. Many will go by numbers.
H6/H7
4R/4L
Gracey 11/12
Gracey 1/2
MTC 13/14
Nebraska 128
etc, etc........
I would suggest that you pick a dental instrument category first, such as Universals, Gracey's, Explorers, etc. and then see if you can find what you are looking for.

If it is a round half circle at the end with a point it is called a explorer. If it kind has an edge (blade) it is a gracie

It's called a pick.

I wouldn't buy one off E-bay though. They sell them at Wal-Mart and Walgreens for like $5. That way you know it wasn't messed with.
