The reason that they are spread out like they are is because of the France family greed. They shut down tracks in the south to take it to California and to give other track that are supposedly more marketable.... in some cases, it has bit them in the butt, yet they will not learn.
The reason .... nothing more than love of the almighty dollar!

NASCAR was originated by Bill France of Daytona Beach where races have been held for more than 60 years. First the races were held at the beach course where half the track was on the sand and half on A1A highway, with the turns in the sand dunes. Could you imagine trying to do that today?
The Southern thing is part truth and part folk lore. It was said that the drivers hauled Moonshine in Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas. There is some truth to this as several drivers did, but mostly they honed their driving skills, as I did, on the back roads. The roads were seldom wide enough to race on, so it was just a lot of bragging at the drive-in as to who was the fastest. Hence, finally a place for these drivers to show their skills at places like Darlington, SC.
Now places like Kansas City and Las Vegas hold NASCAR races. The public love them. Don't you just love rooting for the TIDE car?

Nascar has always run out west. With the popularity of this sport NASCAR focused on finances and fan base, both of which are found in the west.
The northern tour was even run in the early tears.Racses were run in New York(Islip speedway),Maine(oxford raceway) these were 2 of the most popular but the fans wanted more so NASCAR spead out from Penn to N.Y. to New Hampshire for the fan and finace base.
So a southern idea born of econamics(moonshine) turned into a money investment opertunity that the France family took advantage of.They found the need and they maketed the product.NASCAR .

"National" Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing.
NASCAR started in the South (and mainly drove there in it's early days) simple because that was where Bill France (sr.) lived. Had he been in the midwest, west or anywhere else he would have started there. Simply put, when NASCAR started it had many competitors nation wide, it was easier to acquire events in the region in which he lived. As he knew the drivers (he had been one himself) and the tracks owners, personally. In NASCAR's first season (for Modifieds 1948) he had already had events in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and further west.
The idea that NASCAR was ever a strictly southern region sport is misinformation on the publics part.

I think all would agree. It's called corporate exposure. If racing today lived in the south how many dozen corporate sponsors would there be? Hooters, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Vadalia Onion Farming or Southern Country Cured Ham. Who else, Bubba Gump's Grab Catchers, Southern Comfort, Jim Beam or Bowers Bait and Tackle. How many teams and individuals could survive on their $30,000.000 up front dollars per individual car. ZZZIPP nobody!
The country is sharing the wealth. That's why Nextell Cup is walking over other sports and growing in popularity do to the miserable TV commercials which get peppered in at the wrong time. The greedy boys in Florida have their hands in everyones pocket. You, me and the guy down the street.

Nascar is southern born, but embraced world wide. And one of the highest view spectator sports. They moved the races so fans in other regions would not have to travel as far to attend an event, and to attract interest from those in other areas. Which is great to a degree.
However, I personally think its a shame to take races away from the south...especially North Carolina. Which is the home of nascar, and give them to other areas. It's all about the profit. But fans still made the trips to see the races. I drive by an empty Rockingham Speedway every day and it makes me cringe.

NASCAR started out in the South. The Carolinas and Florida are the home of NASCAR. It has spread across the nation due to new fans getting interested in the sport. California and New York are bringing in more money due to their locations and population. Therefore, NASCAR will go where the money is.

The biggest reason for races in NY, CA, and other states is that Nascar has sucked most of the money out of the southern race fans pockets and is looking for other people to start bleeding dry.

NASCAR has southern roots, for many years all of the races were in the south. But due to popularity growth, it expanded into other areas of the country.

These venues were supposed to increase Nascar's following. However, they can never sell out the California races.
