I'm going to New York with my schools concert band (I'm in it) playing at the UN Headquarters Lobby and I'm not asking on where to go because that's already planned out (Broadway, Times Square, Empire State Building, Radio City, Metropolitan, Harlem, Cotton Club, Central Park.) What I'm asking is what are the secrets of New York? Are there any local customs or inside traditions (for example: when I went to Jamaica I learned a Jamaican hand shake, stuff like that), secrets about what would make a New Yorker proud and/or pissed off, secrets about the sites and basically any more secrets that you can give about New York.

ahh, new york city. i love it =]] umm, make sure you keep your money/belongings protected.. the pick-pocketers there are insanely talented. too bad you're not going to chinatown, thats definately someone you should see. and, if you're buying a fake item from one of the street vendors.. you can almost ALWAYS talk them down. if they say they want $40 for a purse, chances are you can get it for a lot less. If you have a choice, go to the Empire state building and Times Square at night.. its so gorgeous with everything lit up.

There are some well known rules, sure. Like: Don't be chatty while waiting for the subway. It's okay if someone asks me "Does this train stop at xyz" or "Did they make an announcement (why the train's late)". But that's it. Don't follow it up with "B/c I've really got to get to work. If I'm late this time....etc, etc" -- then we think you're crazy. And we don't like crazy people, ESPECIALLY on a subway platform.

Don't wear white sneakers with jeans. Tourist.
If you wear socks with sandles we'll know you're German.
Ditto for back packs with your name on them.

If you're looking for directions, don't go up to a stranger and say "Excuse Me...", often we'll think you're asking for money. Say instead "Can you help me with directions", or simply "Which way is Broadway, please?"

Avoid walking with three people across the sidewalk, especially in Rockefeller Center. We know you're tourists, but we need to get by you to go to lunch/business meetings, etc.

Don't go to a deli at 8:45 am and ask questions about their menu. Wait till 9:15 when we've all gotten our breakfast and went into the office. The deli people really hate tourists at that time of day.

Really, just a lot of don'ts! Enjoy the city, keep your belongings close and know where you're going.

A secret, although it should be common sense: when you are standing in front of a subway car waiting to board, wait until everybody waiting to exit does before you try to get on. Nothing will **** off a New Yorker more or will get you an elbow to the solar plexus faster.

If you are coming in the spring be sure to check out the Met's rooftop garden.
