My boys have had a goopy discharge coming out of their eyes for the past few weeks. They both took the antibiotic eye drops and it didn't change it. I've been cleaning the house like crazy because I'm afraid it's contagious. Sheets, blankets, towels, etc. get washed daily. Toys, doornobs, light switches, etc. are disinfected, daily. The nurse said to go w/o treatment in their eyes and we've done this for the past week. It's a little bit better, but they get the discharge when their eyes get wet (like at bath time or if they) or when they are sleeping. It's not pink eye. There is no pink, no watery eyes, no puffiness or swelling, they don't itch their eyes. I'm just not sure what it is and was wondering if anyone else's kids have had this?

This sounds a bit like Conjunctavitis which my kids always get when they have colds.
I make up a solution of Chammomile Tea and let it cool. Then several times a day, I wipe their eyes using a piece of cotton wool for each eye. (clean piece of cotton wool for each eye with each child) and with in 2 days it's all clear!
Keep the tea in the fridge and use for the whole day then make a new lot the next day.

My two have it now. My doctor is treating them for sinus infection with an oral antibiotic. A friend and I were talking tonight b/c her little girl had it ... turned out to be staph and went through the other three kids! (The skin under her eye was very red and very swollen.) The weather flip flops so much where we live that I fell pretty sure that mine just have allergy related sinus infections, though. Watch it closely--it doesn't seem like you can do too much more if you've taken them to the doctor. Good luck -- I kinda think my little boy is enjoying his new title of "snotty eye."
I like the eye doctor idea! Sometimes the pediatrician doesn't know everything.
Careful with the Benadryl if the eye junk is goopy. My pharmacist says clear drainage gets the antihistamine. Just like when the snot is thick and green ... you don't want to "dry it in."

My boys had a problem with chrinic infections when they were little because their lacrimal ducts weren't opened yet. Your boys may have seasonal allergies that are causing their sinuses to swell and close their lacrimal ducts which won't let the eyes drain. Try giving them a little Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or a sinus medication at bedtime for a few days and see if it clears up. If it clears up, call the doctor and tell him why. Don't give them the Benadryl for more than a few days without talking to a doctor though. Hope this helps.

My daughter had something similar to this called caguntivitis, I don't think I spelled it right, but it's basically caused by kids wiping runny noses and then touching their eyes, they put her on eye drops but the ones she got had some sulfate in it and alot of kids are sensetive to this type of medication and it can cause the stuff to just get worse, so my best suggestion give your kids baths twice a day and keep their hands clean, you might also want to try childrens clairitin, it helps with watery eyes, and helps dry up any yuck in their nose, it helped my daughter. good luck

I'd call your doctor and explain that the antibiotics didn't work and going without treatment for a week didn't work. The doctor may call you back in. As a precaution, I'd take them to the eye doctor; he or she might be able to give you a more accurate diagnosis.

My son had this when he was a baby and the doctor said it was clogged tear ducts and he would have to get operated on after he turned one. One day I was shopping and a woman came up to me and said her son had that to and to wash his hair with tear free baby shampoo and when you rinse, let it go into his eyes. I used Johnson's baby shampoo and after the second time doing it, he never had goopy eyes again.

my friends son had that and they were told to wipe his eyes with a little bit of castor oil...not IN his eye..just over it..like wiping out the corner. It seemed to really help.
