Ukelele can be a lot of fun if you can get a lesson or two from someone who knows how to play. The tuning system is a little weird, in that the strings don't go progressively higher or lower when you strum in one direction, but once you figure it out, it's really easy to play chords... Easier than a guitar even. (Think just one finger down to play an entire chord.)
As for coolness/lameness, don't worry about it. If you know how to play it well (which like I said, isn't too hard), you'll probably get more people who are impressed with the fact that you can do it and sound good than you will get people telling you how weird you are for playing it. At the very least, you'll have a hidden talent to brag about someday.

It's pretty cool. There is an enormous body of music and also a very beautiful and presitigious heritage. If you want to play then play. There are different types of ukelele that present different types of sound. Best to you.

I like to listen to ukelele music if it's played well and I don't think it's lame.

I bought a ukulele because I really wanted to learn how to play, but I had A LOT of trouble finding any material on how to play/tune. So now it sits in the corner of my room as decoration....
