THE OLDEST WHO IS ABOUT 7 IS TERRIFIED TO LEAVE HIS PARENT FOR FEAR OF PARENT BEING LONELY. THE YOUNGEST 2 ARE ALWAYS HUNGRY. WHEN THEY COME TO VISIT ME THEY SHOVEL FOOD INTO THEIR MOUTHS LIKE THEY HAVENT EATEN IN DAYS. I KNOW THEY GET 2 MEALS A DAY AT SCHOOL BUT ON WEEKENDS USUALLY ONLY GET SUPPER. THE LITTLEST ONE LOOKS LIKE AN ETHIPIAN WITH THE PROTRUDING BELLY AND SKINNY ARMS AND LEGS. I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THEM THAT I ALLOW THEM TO EAT ANYTHING THEY WANT WHEN I SEE THEM. I ALSO GIVE THEM MONEY TO BUY SNACKS AT SCHOOL. I KNOW THESE ARE NOT NUTRITIIONAL SNACKS BUT AT LEAST IT IS SOMETHING. I HAVE TRIED TALKING TO THE PARENT ABOUT THIS BUT WITH NO CHANGE TO BE SEEN. SHOULD I INTERFERE?

You say they only eat one meal a day at home on the weekends. Do you know this for sure? Are they being watched by a sitter or by the parent? I ask because I have a 4-yr-old and a two-yr-old. My older was born early and is in perfect health except the boy never gains weight. He is so skinny and we have tried everything. He gets 5+ meals/snacks a day and will usually only eat a bite or two but then once or twice a week he eats like he's never seen food. He is also very clingy and doesn't like to be away from me. We worked for two years to help him be okay with it. I'm not sure what's going on but maybe trying to teach the kids to make cereal and sandwiches sothat they can start to take care of themselves. If they need help, you need to call CPS. Try talking to mom about getting her life organized with a system and maybe the meals will come too. Good luck.

You might want to look into local parenting or nutrition classes that are available for parents in your community, and offer these as referrals to the parents, or offer to attend the classes with the parent. If you do this, try to be sensitive, as it sounds like there might be a lot of different issues involved here.

Also, where I live, teachers and counselors are required to make a report if they suspect child abuse or neglect, with the appropriate child welfare agency who will investigate and intervene, if necessary. You could report this to someone at the school, or you may want to speak to someone at the school or the child welfare agency yourself.

You can keep the call for info anonymous, if you like, but if it sounds like there is a real concern, someone should step in, and at a minimum, provide some additional support and education for the family.

You can put in an anonymous call to Child Services, but be aware that they can't respond to every single report. If you can document their behavior and physical appearance, that will help tremendously.

You should go to the police and let them check it out or when you see them take them to a doctor if you can without there parents knowing.

You can call child protective services. They may ask for your name, but they should keep it confidential.

God bless you for looking out for the little ones.
