There is no time limit. Any decent car dealer has a list of Finance Companies that have contacted him seeking business. Should your dealer not have introduced you to one or more of these, then either has been, for some reason, denied these facilities or he has tried to propose you and had you turned down as a bad risk.
These days finance companies use 'Credit Scoring' to decide whether an applicant is credit worthy and these schemes are not always fair to buyers,

The dealer will typically get an answer from the bank it submitted your application to the same or next day. I takes longer when there is a credit issue and they have to submit to other banks. The last resort being sub-prime lenders. It could take a week or two if your credit is pretty bad.

Anthony,
About 10 minutes, if they want the sale.
Fill this credit agreement in, Mr / Mrs / Ms. so & so, I will have it set up with our credit broker in 15 minutes, (and gain the 5% commission.) on the finance.
Thank you. Here are the keys.
Such is the nature of the beast that sells cars.
For my sins, I used to be one, and was ticked off for advising customers to take out a loan privatly, at much better rates.
Bob.
