if you have your copy of your tax returns from prior years then you probably don't need the records from the CPA's office, just take your copies and current year info to your new accountant.

What kind of records do you want?

If you need copies of your US 1040 you can request a copy at you local IRS office. If you need copies of your state income tax return you should be able to contact NJ.

If you need other records you should start with the NJ state board of public accountancy. I'm not sure what they are called in NJ ,look it up on line. They might have the address. A CPA is required to keep client records for several years. If nothing else you can file a complaint with them.

You could also send a certified or return receipt letter to the CPA's old address requesting your records. The Post Office might have a forwarding address. He might even get the letter and respond.

I would think that there is a law pertaining to letting clients know of the offices moving or closing. You will probably have to contact another CPA in your area to find out the procedure.

Well, this is one reason why YOU should have at least copies of ALL your records. If you only used the CPA for preparing taxes, they shouldn't have any records except for copies of your returns. You can order a tax transcript from the IRS at no charge and should receive it within to weeks. If you need actual copies of your returns, there is a $39 charge for each year and it may take 2 months. If you are looking for supporting documents, why don't YOU have them?
