23 chickens x 2 legs = 46
7 cows x 4 legs = 28

28 + 46 = 74 legs..

7 cows and 23 chickens = 30 animals

7x4 legs = 28 + 23 x 2= 46 total 28 + 46 = 74 legs

The farmer is drunk, is need of glasses and is 82 years old. He does not own any cows or chickens because he ate the ones he owned already. Although he is a Morman with 5 wifes, 7 daughters and 11 sons, 3 sisters, 9 brothers, 3 cats and 5 dogs.

Well let's see.30 cows with 4 legs apiece makes for 120 legs....
hmmm.. he only counted 74 legs

So that's 46 legs missing

So the obvious answer is he has 17 cows and three HUGE Chickens that ate 13 cows between them.

23 chickens and 7 cows

To see how this works...

Let A be the number of chickens and B the number of cows.

Chickens have 2 legs and cows have 4.

As such, A number of chickens would have 2A legs, and B number of cows would have 4B legs.

In other words, the total number of chicken legs is 2A, and the number of cow legs is 4B.

Now, we know that the total number of animals is thirty and the total number of legs is seventy-four.

We can thus derive two equations from the information you gave:

2A+4B=74
A+B=30

Multiply the bottom equation by 2 and subtract:

2A + 4B = 74
2A + 2B = 60
-
-------------------
0 + 2B = 14 => B=7

We know from the first equation that A+B=30
Since B is 7, A must be 30-7=23

As such, A=23 and B=7

Meaning that you have 23 chickens and 7 cows.
