what is 666?

sorry i am jewish lol and i have to write a christian analysis of a novel for school. a significant number in the book is 666 and my professor wants me to talk about its significance.

is 666 the apocalypse? what is its actual context and significance? thanks so much!!

ps. i think he wants me to compare the 666 to the apocalyspe-like events in the novel... is 666 comparable to the downfall of humanity then?

The Number of the Beast is a concept from the Book of Revelation of the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The Bible identifies "the beast" by several means, one of which is the "number of his name...666". It is not the apocalypse. It is the number of a man, the Antichrist, but more so it is the organized religion that this "man" represents. It is a religion that "speaks great things against the most high, thinks to change times and laws, claims to be God on earth", and will rise to the forefront to force the inhabitants of the earth to "worship the beast", to receive "the mark of the beast" with the threat of persecution and death for noncompliance. Read Revelation, the last book in the Bible. It's for Jews as well as Gentiles.

Read the Book of Revelations, the number is called the Mark of the Beast and refers to the Antichrist.

The interpretations thereof have been widely speculated. I can't even begin to list the books that have made a guess as to what this means.

Probably, though, the novel you're reading only refers to general doom, strife or antagonism. Going far beyond the original context (Revelations) probably would be too much time spent outside that context.

6 is considered the "devils number" by christianity. 7 is gods number (a perfect number) because 4 (the four elements earth, fire, water, wind) plus 3 (father, son, holy spirit) equals seven. since satan wants to be like god but cant his number is 6. having three sixes in a row, 666, is another way of "mocking god" with the trinity and wanting to be like god.

666 is supposed to be the number on the antichrist or the antichrist will mark his followers with those numbers or something to that effect. it is a symbol of ill fortune though and the end of the world. the book of revelations might have more information on how that symbol leads to the end of the world. hoped that helped
