It depends on a couple of factors. If you're single, most likely you'll be required to live in the barracks or dorms at some point in time, and no pets allowed there. You also have to keep in mind that even if you can live off post (off base), it might be hard to find housing that allows pets at your next duty station. Also, it's very hard for a single person in the military to keep a pet - you might go on manuvers for days at a time in the field (no chance to come home for several days), you might go TDY (temporary duty) for weeks or months at a time and can't take the pet with you, or you could get sent to combat overseas and can't take your pet with you. Even permanent changes of duty overseas, where your family can move with you, might require a quarantine period for your pet at the new country. Some animals, such as snakes, turtles, small mammals, ect., might require extra paperwork from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, or be illegal to import into another country.
My husband and I adopted a large dog while I was in the Air Force. Because I was married, I was allowed to live off-base. When we moved to my next duty assignment, though, it was almost impossible to find an appartment that would let us have a large dog, and then we had to pay an extra $25 a month in rent at that.
