How is he hurting himself? Whatever he is injuring himself on should be removed immediately. Whenever he starts going nuts talk to him in a soothing voice and help him to calm himself. It is normal for a bird to flap it's wings and go silly. I call it flying practice, but it doesn't sound normal that he is actually hurting himself.

Does this happen at night after he has fallen off the perch?

Cockatiels have a real problem with night frights.

When I have cockatiels I had to leave the cage uncovered, and a night light on in the room where the cage was.

Basicly the little bird gets startled easily, and it takes a litt;e light and being able to see for the little guy to know that everything is OK and he can climb back on the perch again.

I have a parakeet, and he does the same thing. He has been since we split the female and him up from fighting. I think it just has feathers loose, and tries to get them off without having to bend his head back to reach them. Its normal.

This is normal behavior.

It is a way to excersise and a way to show off for you. All of my birds do it too.
