I'm going to differ from my fellow answerer's. For a beginner, the vehicle that I would choose as safest for all concerned would be a full sized pick-up with bucket seats. The pickup puts your favourite teen above the traffic, so they can see much better what is going on down the road and better react to it, the bucket seats limit how many passengers he/she can carry and so limits the distractions to him /her. Pick up trucks being higher, I think put the occupants in a better position to survive an accident. If your teen s a true beginner, An old F150 would be great, you also have to train them on the proper use of cell phones and stereo volume when they are supposed to be driving. As a teen, I had my stereo Blasting to near pain levels, as usual. I drove right in front of a train because due to my loud tunes, I wasn't paying attention, and I couldn't hear his horn.....it really was a near death experience that I hope your teens can learn from.
