The new ones are water cooled and too many improvements to mention. Water cooling is ALWAYS preferable to air cooling.

Maybe it would be easier to talk about the similarities. .They are really different cars in every way.

The old vw beetle had a rear engine. the new one has a front engine
The old was air cooled. the new is liquid cooled.
The old one took 28 seconds to go from 0-60, the new one takes 8 seconds. The new one has air conditioning, the old did not.

the look a little bit similar... that's really it.

New Beetles have the engine in the front, is front wheel drive and is water cooled.

Old Beetles have the engine in the rear, is rear wheel drive and is air cooled.

Air cooled is always better because it doesn't freeze in the winter or boil over in the summer.

And look at everything that is air cooled. Most planes, jets, older VW's, tanks, helicopters, guns and your PC.

Also with advances in techknowledge newer parts are available for the old Beetle, such as fuel injection, turbo, A/C and 4 wheel disk brakes

the only similarity is that they use a 4 cyl engine (totally different one thought), they look kinda the same, and they have 4 wheels and 2 doors.

the old bug used a small, air cooled flat-4 engine.
New uses a water cooled 2.0L engine.
New is much larger and heavier and safer.
old is also much slower
new is a relatively medium priced car
old was cheapest of cheap.
