I think we are punishing ourselves already. In the sense that that kind of stupidity on our part bears its own punishment in itself.
EDIT:
Someone below mentions that God told us to do what we want with all the animals. actually he told us to have dominion over them. But that bears a certain responsibility with it. Dominion is a form of leadership or rulership, and implies taking care of, and treating in an orderly, responsible way.

Yeah, were the Dinosaurs the first try, and then He said "Hey wait a minute, I should make these things look more like me." Or maybe the when the bible says "we" were made in God's image, maybe the "we" refers to the Dinosaurs and not us. Hmmm.
Also, if we are being punished for the extinct and endangered species that humankind contributed to (as some answers suggest), I think that God should be more specific and name names.

Those who find pleasure in hurting and killing animals and don't repent will be punished. We are supposed to love all of God's creations and use them in wisdom.
But those who put the value of the life of an animal above that of a child of God are in for just as much punishment if not more.
I hate to see the earth polluted and animals killed for money etc.. But there are more urgent matters to focus on. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to protect these animals. But when we give more attention to saving an endangered species than to say... saving a humans life we've become backwards. God's children are God's most amazing creation, I think it's taught that way in 90 percent of all religions.

They are all precious creatures but remember God knows all and is in power of all and he knows what he is doing. Its like saying that ppl should be punished for dying. WE are like an endangered speices too. When God decides something, He is always making the right choice no matter what

Mother nature has a way with all species. If you start counting the years from when "Gods creatures" first came on earth we have been her only for a blink of the eye. I'm sure we'll get what's coming to us.

Extinctions have happened countless times over countless eons, long before humans ever existed. We are in the midst of another extinction that we are helping along. We cannot be punished for something that is also a natural occurence. We are just stupid until we realize that the Earth is to be treasured, not raped.

Two possible answers
1) How do you know we're not?
2) The answer lies in Rationalism, though a more liberal point of view. Assuming G-D did the hole creation thing, then no creatures should be dying off. however, to match up my religous beliefs with my scientific ones (Evolution) I have assumed that G-D is much like a clockmaker, who built this fine machine, then left it alone to see what crawled out of the primordial muck. Yes these animals all stem from him, but their not direct creations.

um....we didnt kill all of them. well, dinosaurs became extinct when they ran out of water, and some animal species became extinct during the flood. God tells us we should kill animals to eat and keep us alive, but the unnecessary hunting and killing of animals such as hunting for animals for [endangered] animals for their fur and tearing down homes for animals is just stupid. it is man's choice whether to listen to God when he says that all creatures are precious or to not. God does not punish us because it is our choice and he didnt command us to not kill them. i believe that hunting is just plain stupid (my opinion). Hunting for furs and tearing down animals homes is dumb because when you want that fur coat you've been dreaming of, or that restaurant you've always wanted, think about this: nothing is more priceless than bringing back an extinct species. nothing is good enough to make a species extinct, such as a restaurant or a mall, or a fur coat or whatever. The gifts that God gave us in nature and animals should not be taken for granted. He gave them to us because he loves us and he cares for us. Now if you just go and ruin his gifts and love for us, like taking an animals home, and making something for yourself, you have just taken his gifts for granted.
sorry i just got on a roll :-)

A great many of us think we will be. Punished that is.
I think a lot of the people torturing and slaughtering huge numbers of innocent animals in factory farms are headed to the hot place when they take the big dirt nap.
Biblically speaking, God made man, then made ALL the animals as gifts to man. And look what we've done with God's gift to us?

99.99999% percent of the creatures that have gone extinct, did so before man existed.
Besides, there is no god. If god wanted all of the creatures to live,
and there was a god, I'm sure none would go extinct.
The fact that animals do go extinct, further proves Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection, also known as evolution.
