C.S.Lewis was probably one of the most brilliant minds in England during the twentith century. In 1942, at the height of WWII, he wrote an essay entitled:
"Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe"
In it he shows that the ideas of right and wrong or good and evil are inate to mankind. If this were not so, then the whole point of opposing Hitler was worthless. The whole concept of blame is irrelevent.
What is behind that concept of Right and Wrong:
The individule? Hardly! Hitler said that the Holocost was good.
Society? not that either. Germany stood behind what Hitler was doing.
Religion? 9/11 proves that that is not necessirily the case.
Evolution? If so, can it be that in 1,000,000 years from now, we will have evoled a different concept of right and wrong? I don't think so and neither does any thinking person.
So what is behind that concept of Right and Wrong.
I call that thing, person, force (Whatever name you want to give it) --God--
Now the problem comes from the idea that if God exists and has placed within us the inate sense of right and wrong, then He has done it for a reason. What is that reason? I believe that I know. However, until someone figures it out for themselves, quoting the Bible or the Koran or Marx, or Darwin, or Dawkin makes little sense.
Now to your statements about hell.
Right and wrong are two separate entities. Here on earth we see both, we know that both exist, and are able to choose one or the other. Now if God is the author of Right and Wrong then He also has the ability to remove one or the other. I will call the place where he removes "Right" or "Good" Hell. Now Hell is not so bad for those entities that have never known anything else. ( It would be something like a person that grew up in the slums of Callcutta. They do not realize how bad it really is.) However, Hell is horrible to those who know what "Right" or "Good" are, but can never accomplish either of those qualities. And interactions with others would soon become non existant because you know that every thought that the other person has about you is only evil.
No wonder it is called the "Lake of Fire". Lakes in ancient times were places where people socialized, where they washed and cleaned themselves, where they got water to drink, and where people refreshed themselves. All of those things are good. Now take all those things away. There is no socialization, no place to clean ones clothes or wash oneself, no water to drink, and no way to refresh oneself.
Interesting isn't it. Hell doesn't need to be a place of punishment, it merely has to be a place without "Good".
I know that I would make sure that there was no possibility that I would ever go to a place like that. It would make the slums of Callcutta seem like heaven.

Dear Penny,
Several years ago I had a co-worker that was so much fun to be around and she used to say she wanted to go to hell because all of the best people would be there.
A few months after I switched jobs I learned that her beloved son, his wife and their best friends were boating one night when the boat lost power. They were rammed by another boat in the dark and the woman's son and daughter in law were instantly killed.
I see her sometimes in the grocery store and what a difference has come over her. Yes she was fun to be around in the past but now she is a JOY to be around. She is sure that her son is in heaven so now that is where she wants to be.
I hope that you won't have to experience such tragic circumstances to find out what is really important.

You're forgetting about the harp music. You can play some pretty cool stuff on a harp. And hop around on fluffy white clouds. For ever and ever and ever and ever. That doesn't sound like fun to you?
And what about all the super awesome people who will be in heaven? Like, um... well, Jesus will be there. And, um... Did I mention Jesus?

How would you know what would seem more fun? Ever been to either place? Ummm, burning in a lake of fire for eternity-no that doesn't sound like my cup-of-tea, no matter who's gonna be there! Besides, I don't think they'll be having fun, either.

Christ forces no one to believe in him, you have a choice to make for yourself. God sends no person to hell they go there because they want to. and as a matter of fact - they work very hard to go to hell!
