If you try treks, don't get anything less than the 4500. They run about 400-550. Giants, go to iguanas or boulders... they are decent ways to start mountain biking. Cannondale has the F300-500 and they are pretty nice too. Specialized has Rockhoppers though most are over 500. Remember this above all, it is better to get a good quality hardtail as opposed to a low quality dual suspension.

Avoid the Treks if you can. A cheap bike is a cheap bike and Trek is not even worth the price you will pay. Cannondale has some lower-end beginner bikes that aren't too pricey. Titus carries badass bikes that are a bit more expensive. Your best bet would be to get a "gently used" bike of reputable brand, take it to your local shop and swap out the parts you don't want for the parts you do (ie put some Chris King hubs on there and some carbon bars and a nice Fox fork!)

Good luck!!!

ironhorse makes good bikes for the buck. not top quality stuff, but a Warrior will hold up pretty good for most riders. if you want something to last a long time, get a hardtail frame, they require almost no maintainence and theres nothing to adjust! they are usually cheaper. $500 = a good hardtail bike or a cheap dual suspension. dont buy a dually unless you have the bank to crank out some bills when you need tune ups.

my old bike (about $2000 worth of parts) constantly had issues. lucky for me, i work at a bike shop where i get free expert help and thousands of dollars of professional tools.

Trek 4500 but I would spend about $620 and get the Trek 6000 with disc breaks
