The kind that says "meow." If you're not home "alot" as in, only home and awake for maybe 4hours a day, then a dog is a bad idea. A cat, on the other hand, will keep itself entertained if need be and NEVER needs to be let out. Sure, you'll have a litterbox to clean every few days, but recently one hit the market that cleans itself and flushes the waste.

But then again, "alot" is fairly relative. I guess any low-excesize requirement dog could be okay as long as you have a few hours to devote to it. Think small, as you may have to litter-train it to prevent accidents in the house while you're away, as crating it would be pretty cruel if you're gone 10hrs at a time. A dog-walker could be a god thing to hire, too.

EDIT
What's with everyone stressing "love and attention"? I don't get it, is it not possible to love something you are not constantly around? I allways thought it was. And attention? A couple hours is still attention. Granted, my dog hardly ever leaves my sight, but that's because I'm jobless, schooless, and generally have no life. Plus I'm potty-training her at the moment. These people think that to have a dog you must not have a job or social life. That's a little warped if you ask me. I mean, parents have lives beyond their kids, yeah? If not, I must be seriously neglected or something.

Plus, there's allways doggy daycare. My vet offers that for $6/day. They atend to the dog's general needs, feeding and walking and socializing. That could be useful.

You shouldn't get a dog then. Dogs need a lot of attention. They need companionship. They're called man's best friend for a reason. They LOVE being around people, especially their owners. If you aren't going to be home a lot then he/she won't have that companionship. You also won't be around a lot to feed it regularly and take it out to the bathroom regularly. If you plan on crating your dog while you're away then this can lead to aggression if it's left alone and in a cage for a long periods of time. Dogs need love and care constantly. If you can't be around to do that I woudln't suggest getting one. Try another animal that requires less care. A cat can be a very good companion for someone who isn't home a lot because cat's virtually take care of themselves. You feed it and clean the litter box and pay attention to it on it's terms. Dogs need a lot more attention. Hope this helps...

Dogs are great pets for people. But people have to be good to their dogs too. Would you like to have someone just to feed you and let you outside? Dogs can only be a GOOD dog if you put the work into them. There are alot of responsibilities when it comes to having a dog. You have to be home to house train it, teach it not to tear things up, teach it to stay home, teach it not to bite kids, and sooo much more. If you want a dog get one, but it's not fair to the animal. Get a fish . . . .

Yes, it is wonderful to have a happy puppy waiting for you at the door when you get home but in order to have a happy puppy, you need to be able to invest the time and care to keep the puppy happy, otherwise both you and your puppy are going to be very unhappy as your puppy shreds, poops and barks to alleviate it's boredom, loneliness and frustration.

Dogs are pack animals and expecting them to spend most of their time alone is unrealistic. Having a dog is in, many ways, like having a child. Until you are ready to make that kind of commitment, a cat (or a pair cats) would likely be a better match for your lifestyle.

Definetly NOT a husky. I'll tell you that much. Most dogs are very destructive if left alone for a long amount of time. The reason that it is is because they get bored. I can't really tell you which breed to get, since personalities vary. If anything, I might recommend you getting a small dog. IF you're willing, give your dog a friend......get a second small dog. That way they won't get bored because they'll have each other. Also, it might sound harsh, but it really isn't since they're together, but if you want to prevent damage to your belongings, Buy a big kennel for your doggies. Give them enough room in the kennel so they won't feel so cramped up inside. And be sure to add some toys to keep them busy.

Dogs require time and involvement. A fish or a turtle might be a better pet. Or two cats. Cats can live without us being with them all of the time, but will become lonely, so get two. They take up no space and will entertain each other when you're gone. And they are so much fun!

If you're not home alot then I wouldn't suggest you even get a dog. Dogs need love and attentions and if you're not gonna be there to give it to them, then you don't need a pet. The poor thing would be lonely.

Dont get a dog if you are not planning on being around to be with him. Dogs are pack animals, meaning they like to belong to a pack and they will accept humans as their pack and if they cannot bond with you and be with you it will really be unfair to the dog. Dogs like attention and need disciplined just like children.
