Many people MISUNDERSTAND the Crusades. Criminals in the Middle East attacked caravans and murdered and robbed innocent people. They charged "protection" money like the organized crime figures of the last century did in many US cities. Those in power effectively sold franchises to the CRIMINALS so the "government" was no help.
Merchants in Europe wanted merchandise from China and India, but it was too expensive to carry it because of the criminal element's control in the Middle East. Those MERCHANTS were the TRUE power behind the war... "Follow the MONEY!" The religious facet kept people from complaining about it, but the TRUE reason and support was because of the trade issues.

The east gained technology, just as did the west.
For example, the first windmill ever constructed in the Middle East was built by the crusaders.

Reminds me of Bush's war on Irak. The Pope wanted more power=money and sent brainwashed soldiers to fight for him under the pretence of getting back the Holy Lands. Not much has changed--Irak is a mess as I'm sure the Holy Lands were in those days.
