Could be a vitamin deficiency of some sort. Lack of specific vitamins often show up in deformations in finger and toe nails. See a doctor....

possibly a fungus or bacteria...i eneded losing both my big toenails from playing soccer and having my feet stepped on so many times...do you play sports where you feet may be getting hit without even knowing

Since you say that your shoes fits okay and that you haven't hurt yourself, perhaps you have poor blood circulation. Check with your doctor.
