Lettuce (crunchy) offers a contrast in textures from bread and lunch meat (both of which tend to be soft).

In terms of flavor, lettuce contrast with the meat too where lettuce tends to be slightly sweet to the saltiness of lunch meat.

In general, depending upon the lettuce... the greener the lettuce the higher the nutrition. Also, you get fiber from lettuce.

Most people use lettuce as a filler... If they don't have enough food, throw in a salad. ...lol..

Do you mean the reason for the existence of lettuce? or, are you asking about the core, which kind of looks like a point? Otherwise all the lettuce I know is round and doesn't have a point. You should be more specific. The reason, for lettuce is it is yummy and makes nice salads, adds to burgers, and is a source of vitamins and roughage(fiber).

It is a vegetable. It is widely available all year round. Most varieties taste good ... some are a little bitter to me. Lettuce generally has few calories making it a good nutritious (No I am not talking iceberg) addition to a mean without adding tons of calories.
